WebP can reduce photo and graphic file sizes while retaining useful visual quality. Smaller assets can improve page loading, especially on mobile connections, but the correct quality still depends on the content and final display size.
Choose JPG when an older form or application accepts photographs but not WebP. Choose PNG when transparency or crisp interface graphics matter. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas receive a white background.
Zoom in on faces, text, gradients, shadows, and sharp edges. Lossy formats can introduce blockiness or halos at low quality settings. Keep the original file when further editing or a different export may be needed.
Changing PNG or JPG to WebP does not automatically resize the image. A very large photograph can remain unnecessarily heavy even with efficient compression, so check both pixel dimensions and downloaded bytes. For a website, create the display dimensions first and then compare WebP quality settings. For logos, screenshots, and diagrams, inspect fine text and transparent edges; a slightly larger lossless-style result can be preferable to a smaller file with visible artifacts.
