Choose a consistent position

Bottom center works well for reports and handouts, while outside corners are useful when binding or existing footer content must be avoided. Preview the source pages to find a clear area before applying numbers.

Control numbering independently

The starting value controls the printed label, while the selected range controls which PDF pages receive a number. This supports a cover page without a number or a document section that must begin at a specific value.

Allow safe margins

Numbers are inset from page edges to reduce the risk of clipping during printing. Pages with unusual crop boxes, rotations, or existing headers should still be checked after download on both screen and paper.

Match logical and physical numbering

Decide whether the first PDF page should display 1 or whether numbering begins after a cover, contents page, or introductory section. The starting value changes the printed label; it does not change the underlying page order or PDF viewer count. When a report already refers to chapter or appendix numbers, test several pages near section boundaries and confirm that citations, contents entries, and printed labels still point to the intended material.
